Rumor has it: Mayweather vs. Ortiz

As we prepare for the Pacquiao-Mosley fight tonight, it is worth noticing the buzz about Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s comeback.

Nothing has been confirmed yet, but multiple sources say that Mayweather may square up against Victor Ortiz in September.  Other sources have said Mayweather's been eying Miguel Cotto for a fight.

Both would seem like good warm-up fights for Mayweather.  Ortiz, despite winning the attention and respect of boxing followers after his upset against Andre Berto, has certainly had his fair share of lackluster performances.  And many people believe Miguel Cotto is washed up at this point.

As much as I dislike Floyd Mayweather as a fighter and a human being, I approve of both choices.

First, I don't agree that Cotto is washed up.  With Emanuel Stewart in his corner since his loss to Pacquiao, Cotto's looked great.  He had a terrific brawl with Ricardo Mayorga in March, ultimately winning by TKO in the twelfth round with his vicious left hook.  His fight with Yuri Foreman was also very telling of his skills right now.  He's slated to fight Antonio Margarito for a second time; if he wins this I think he'd be a good fight for Mayweather.  I've wanted him to fight Mayweather for some time now, too.

Victor Ortiz is also a good option.  He's a slugger and a southpaw, two things that could really mess up Pretty Boy Floyd, as we've seen from his fights with Zab Judah and Jose Luis Castillo.  And he proved a few weeks ago that when he shows up he can beat anybody.  Get him in the right mental state and he could present some real problems for Mayweather.

Again, nothing's official yet.  Guess we'll have to wait and see.  In the meantime, enjoy Pacquiao vs. Mosley tonight!
